A neighborhood for all: Iberia's Teche Ridge will bring homes, jobs ...
Imagine a River Ranch for everyone, where firefighters and cafeteria workers really can live next to doctors and lawyers. It may sound idealistic, but that's exactly what Southern Mutual Help Association, a not-for-profit corporation in Iberia Parish, is aiming to do with 100 acres of land on the outskirts of New Iberia. .
Broadcast Film Critics Love Into The Wild
The Broadcast Film Critics Association claims that their choices for their awards predict Oscars choices something like 90% of the time. Well, yes, thats because they pick 10 movies in the running for Best Picture, and sometimes six nominees in other categories; you give me a list of 20 movies released in the last few months and a dartboard and I could probably be an awesome Oscar predictor. Still, they came up with some strong contenders as nominees for their awards; winners will be announced at a ceremony on January 7. Into the Wild led with seven nominations, a shocker after most regional critics groups failed to mention it at all. It got a nod for Best Picture, director and screenplay for Sean Penn, lead actor for Emile Hirsch, supporting actor for Hal Holbrook, supporting actress for Catherine Keener, and best song for Eddie Vedders Guaranteed.
A new copyright law is coming
It has relented in its fight against digital music sales, and a couple of the big labels are now actively selling their wares online, which they would have called unthinkable just a few years ago. Another issue is whether the music industry's demands are based on sound evidence. In the past month, a respectable government department has thrown doubt on the kind of damage the recording industry claims to have suffered. Industry Canada, one of the two ministries that might emerge as the sponsor of the copyright bill (the other is Heritage Canada), commissioned a stringent study that suggested file-sharing actually helps music sales; this conclusion has been challenged by University of Texas economist Stan Liebowitz. But surely the issue should be more thoroughly thrashed out before the government makes a serious move.
Sandy puts economic survival on curriculum
It aims to set in train a more cohesive national education framework to help prepare Scotland for the economic demands and challenges of the future, including a better focus on entrepreneurialism. HAVING spent time with Bank of Scotland's small business banking and played a key role in Scottish Enterprise's business birthrate strategy, Mr Paton has extensive experience of business creation. "A lot of people come out of school and college and get a good job but they've no real knowledge of business. A lot of them are put off starting their own small business or joining an SME [small or medium sized enterprise], so they join a larger business because it feels safer," notes Mr Paton. He is also of the opinion that there's confusion and lack of unity within Scotland's schools sector. Scotland has no national curriculum, with lessons determined by local authorities.
