B.C. man charged in prostitute slayings

Lawton's body was found on a gravel road last March while Ms. Korroll's body was found in an industrial area last July.

"Both of the victims were preyed upon because their killer saw an opportunity to take advantage of their vulnerable lifestyles," RCMP said Monday in a news release.

Cpl. Dale Carr with the Integrated Homicide Investigative Team said DNA evidence helped police arrest Mr. Butorac last Friday, and police are looking for links between the accused and other homicide cases in the Fraser Valley area east of Vancouver.

A piece of evidence pushed the investigation forward and officers obtained a warrant on Oct. 18 to search Mr. Butorac's home and vehicle in connection with Ms. Korroll's death. DNA samples were sent for analysis, RCMP said.

A herring seiner that has run into trouble several times in the past, including two incidents that threatened its stability, capsized in Pylades Channel Monday night, killing a fisherman.

Searchers recovered a man's body on the shore of Mudge Island, near where the Westisle, a Vancouver-based seiner, flipped over in heavy seas while it had its nets out.

RCMP Cpl Greg Cox said the body recovered from Mudge Island has been taken to Nanaimo regional hospital and has not yet been positively identified. However, he said it is believed to be that of the missing fisherman, who he identified as Patrick Alfred, 70, of Alert Bay.

Four other fishermen who were dumped into the water were rescued by a fifth man who was operating the vessel's skiff.
