Drawing the pro-Tehran line

The Stop The War Coalition In Britain has refused to accept the affiliations of Hands Off The People Of Iran and Communist Students. Mark Fischer writes on these developments. The logic of the decision taken on October 12 by the Stop the War Coalitions officer group to reject the affiliations of Hopi and CS could be pretty drastic.Andrew Murrays terse email announcing the exclusions made it clear that this is a political decision. He wrote that a study of statements and articles issued had convinced the officers that both Hopi and CS are entirely hostile to the coalition, its policies and its work. A sub-committee of the STWC leadership, the steering committee, made this decision. It has 11 members, 3 are members of the SWP (Lindsey German, John Rees, Chris Nineham), 2 are members of the Morning Stars Communist Party of Britain (Andrew Murray and Kate Hudson).

Museum seeks link with NPS

The Cherokee Strip Land Rush Museum on Thursday took a first step toward re-establishing its former relationship with the National Parks Service.

About 30 years ago, the museum became a National Parks Service affiliate, said museum director Heather Ferguson. But the agreement forming that affiliation was somehow allowed to lapse.

Representatives of both entities met Thursday and agreed that a cooperative agreement between them needs to be renewed, Ferguson said.

"Obviously, the affiliation will be advantageous in helping make the museum more visible and will help bring more tourists and money to Arkansas City," Ferguson said. "It will also aid in the museum's growth into a first-class museum."

Three officials of the parks service's Mid-West Region present at the meeting were Al Hutchings, program manager; Gary J.

KU Hospital strengthened by new agreement

For more than 18 months, officials and supporters of the University of Kansas Hospital have feared for the hospital's future.

Their concerns stemmed from bistate affiliation talks designed to strengthen ties among the University of Kansas Medical Center, St. Luke's Hospital of Kansas City and other health-care and research entities.

The bistate talks led to a recent expansion of research and graduate medical education ties between KU Medical Center and St. Luke's, a principal rival of KU Hospital.

But KU Hospital is on firm footing after last week's approval of a new agreement that strengthens its ties to KU Medical Center and Kansas University Physicians Inc.

Bistate affiliation advocates say Kansas and Missouri health-care and research institutions must forge tighter connections for Kansas City to win federal designation as a comprehensive cancer center, which would lead to a tremendous increase in federal funding.

Golisano: Sabres Amerks affiliation going to fall apart

The working relationship between the Rochester Americans and Buffalo Sabres, the longest in pro hockey, could be over after this season. That's the word from Sabres' owner Tom Golisano. Golisano was in Rochester speaking to marketing professionals. At one point, he was asked about the affiliation between the Sabres and the Amerks.

"If you get two management organizations that can't work together or don't want to work together, I guess it's going to fall apart," Golisano said.

And he said he thinks it will.

"It's very convenient for the teams and the players, okay, and to have this thing fall apart at this point doesn't make me very happy," Golisano said. "And it's not because we haven't tried."

Amerks owner Steve Donner says he's never been contacted by Golisano or the Sabres about buying the team.

An assessment of the SEP’s vote and campaign in the 2007 Australian ...

Safari and Cogan were positioned at the top of the ballot paper, and thus benefited from the “donkey vote” (where voters place “1” beside the first candidate, and then number their preferences in order down the ticket, regardless of party affiliation).

In the Senate, the SEP received a total of 3,231 votes. In NSW SEP candidates, Nick Beams and Carol Divjak, won a total of 1,677, while in Victoria, Peter Byrne and Tania Baptist received 1,554. In all, a total of 6,682 votes were cast in the election in support of the SEP’s socialist and internationalist program.

There are a number of interesting and significant features of the SEP’s vote.

Firstly, the Socialist Equality Party was the only party standing candidates in open opposition to all the other parties.

Hire education?

This is in addition to Rs. 1.25 lakh per year as regular fees. Almost anyone with money can become an engineer, quality be dammed! Higher education is available for hire! A similar situation exists with the MBA. If you leave out the top 100 institutes, there are other over 1,200 institutes in India hiring out over 1 lakh seats every year for giving a piece of paper called the MBA or equivalent degree. Over 90% of these courses are run in affiliation with normal universities. These are mostly patronised by those students, who otherwise could not get through to professional courses at the graduation level. This puts a question mark on the basic caliber of the students taken in. Two joint entrance examinations are held in each State as directed by the recent law. One for central counselling of "Merit Seats" and the other for "Management Quota", each being for 50 per cent of seats.
